Rationale

In the last decade the number of studies in medical informatics focusing on such topics as: usability, human factors, user-centered design, users acceptance, or ergonomics have constantly increased. Not only usability studies prove to have a great impact on users acceptance of new applications, it also proves very effective in preventing new categories of medical errors generated by badly designed applications. The human factors engineering principles can efficiently assist healthcare institutions and healthcare IT Industry in employing user-centered design principles when designing, developing and implementing new clinical applications.

Objectives of the Workshop:

1. To welcome newcomers and support their efforts in creating a team competent in Human Factors Engineering and/or building a usability lab; to support scientific connections between the Medical Informatics and the Cognitive Ergonomics communities.
2. To present methodologies and methods used for the study of usability and acceptance of innovative information technologies: activity analysis, usability inspection and tests, user-centred design methods, simulation, medical errors reporting and analysis.
3. To discuss the importance and role of these methodologies before, during and after implementation, particularly in the Healthcare field.
4. To confront experts’ latest studies on a particular Human Factors (HF) related problem in Biomedical Informatics: impact of usability of clinical applications on medical error
5. To initiate an international network for usability and human factors engineering of safety sensitive clinical applications

Tutorials and conferences will be presented by the best experts in the world specialized in Biomedical Informatics and Cognitive Ergonomics. Case-studies and practical experiences will illustrate the most important aspects of the methodology.
